The main airport in the United States that serves Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is Philadelphia International Airport. As of 2022, the airport handled 12.4 million passengers annually, ranking it as the 21st busiest airport in the US and the busiest in Pennsylvania. With 22 airlines operating approximately 500 daily departures to over 130 destinations globally, the airport lies 7 miles (11 km) from the city's center. The airport is the main hub for American Airlines in the Northeastern United States and its main gateway to Europe and the transatlantic region. It is the airline's fifth-largest hub. For UPS Airlines and Frontier Airlines, the airport serves as a regional freight hub and focal city, respectively. The airport serves cities in the Middle East, Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean, Canada, and the United States. In 2019, the airport operated flights to 140 destinations, 102 inside the country and 38 outside.

The Delaware Valley metropolitan area, to which Philadelphia International Airport belongs, the state of Pennsylvania, and Philadelphia all rely heavily on its economies. Airports throughout the state generated $22 billion in economic effect in 2004, according to a report published in the Pennsylvania Air Service Monitor by the Commonwealth's Aviation Bureau. According to a 2017 economic impact analysis the airport commissioned, it generated nearly 96,000 direct and indirect employment, $15.4 billion in total profits, and $5.4 billion in economic activity. Direct access to a fuel supply from Colonial Pipeline was established for the airport in October 2022.

There are 126 gates spread over six terminals at Philadelphia International Airport. International arrivals that have not been pre-cleared are handled in Terminal A. Admirals Clubs are run by American in Terminal F, the B/C connection, and Terminal A. In addition, Terminal A has an American Express Centurion Lounge and a British Airways Galleries Lounge. There are two clubs in Terminal D: the United Club and the Delta Sky Club. There's a USO lounge at Terminal E. There are two portions of Terminal A: east and west. There are 13 gates at Terminal A West and 11 at Terminal A East. The hallway between Terminals A East and A West has three lounges. American Airlines makes extensive use of Philadelphia International Airport as a transatlantic hub for flights between the United States and Europe.
